Quantum computing systems built by IBM, Atom Computing, IonQ, and Australia’s Diraq have all moved on to the final stage of DARPA’s quantum benchmarking scheme, testing their viability for utility-scale operation.
DARPA said the four systems had all passed Stage B of the process and would join systems from Microsoft and PsiQuantum in Stage C, evaluating whether the systems could be deployed at a large scale by 2033.
Quantum Benchmarking Initiative (QBI) MD Michah Stoutimore said: “Stage C is where we begin moving from plans to proof. Our team will be closely scrutinizing the hardware and systems as they develop to determine whether the tech performs the way the models and roadmaps say it should.”
The four systems all have a different approach to qubit technology, including IBM’s exploration of quantum computing with modular superconducting processors and Diraq’s silicon CMOS spin qubits.
