Google says it has the beginnings of a solution for organisations looking to run agentic-type workloads efficiently at large enterprise scale, without reinventing the Kubernetes wheel.
It has now open-sourced Agent Substrate (“in VERY early development”) and a distributed agent runtime designed to sit on top of it, dubbed Agent eXecutor or “AX” – both under a permissive Apache-2.0 licence.
Agent Substrate is a way of building agent-specific controls on top of Kubernetes. It lets users manage agent lifecycles via a minimal control plane “designed for the chatter of millions of sub-second tool calls…”
