Sovereignty is the word of the week at Mobile World Congress as tech executives and global leaders converge to share the latest in network connectivity and mobile AI. The EU, Microsoft and Deutsche Telekom all made sovereignty-related announcements.

Buyers and public sector organisations want the security of local networks, data centres and AI infrastructure – and vendors are rushing to provide options. Microsoft is expanding its EU Sovereign Cloud and Deutsche Telekom launched a European cloud and AI platform.

The EU led the public sector charge announcing it will develop "Europe’s first large-scale federated Telco-Edge-Cloud infrastructure."

European Commission Deputy Director General Renate Nikolay said the €75 million project aims to “build a secure and sovereign convergent communications landscape" by combing EU teleco networks, edge computing and cloud infrastructure into a "single, integrated platform."
