"This is urgent. The AI revolution will need abundant, secure and competitively priced energy across the board."
The UK and US will announce new nuclear builds during Donald Trump's state visit next week, UK ambassador to Washington Peter Mandelson indicated in a weekend lecture heavily focused on AI and China.
There is, as yet, no detailed itinerary for Trump's trip, scheduled as three days starting on September 17. Beyond the royal pomp and circumstance, the trip will center around defence and technology, Mandelson told a gathering at Ditchley Park – which are essentially the same thing.
Given the threat of China, Mandelson told the audience the UK and US must pursue "technology partnerships as significant as the Mutual Defence Agreement," the 1958 deal between the two countries that included sharing nuclear defense technology.
And Mandelson believes nuclear will be a headliner this time too.
