What is Google's algorithm-optimising AlphaEvolve agent?

More than a year after it was first previewed, and after testing it on its own TPU design programme, Google is opening up access to a coding agent for optimising software and algorithms.

The AlphaEvolve agent is powered by Google’s Gemini models and co-designed by its DeepMind research team to address demand beyond simple coding agents for AI able to tackle complex engineering problems.

AlphaEvolve was first pushed to a private preview in May 2025 but became generally available via the Gemini Enterprise Agent Platform on July 9.

Google Cloud Chief Scientist Pushmeet Kohli said AlphaEvolve would help “uncover breakthrough algorithms” as “AI is moving beyond acting as a productivity assistant that accelerates how we work to a discovery engine that expands what we can achieve.”
