An easier route to Valkey clusters?

Big migrations from Redis have typically still meant rewriting parts of the application.

Organisations looking to move from Redis to widely adopted open-source fork Valkey are set to get an easier migration path for large applications.

That’s courtesy of open-source database services firm Percona, which has promised to release the code for Valkey-proxy later this month and take it GA in 2027.

Percona's Redis/Valkey ecosystem GM Kyle Davis told The Stack the proxy will also help address an "original sin" copied over from Redis that made it harder to scale on top of the data structure store, by decoupling applications from Valkey.

Speaking at Open Source Summit Europe in Prague, he said: "Your application then talks to the proxy in the way that an application over a decade ago would talk to Redis. And then it live translates that to a modern cluster, so your application doesn't have to change, but you can get the scalability of what we have in the modern cluster."

Valkey-proxy will be released under a  BSD-3-Clause license and aims to make it easier for those migrating standalone projects to do the same for large clusters.
