Google Cloud doubled revenue on AI momentum

Google appears to be gaining share on its hyperscaler rivals, and has a huge backlog to work through over the next few years.

As the financial community analyzes Anthropic's S-1 statement for a sense of the long-term viability of the enterprise AI market, Google dropped a huge data point in the middle of that discussion Wednesday.

For the three-month period ending September 30th, Google Cloud reported $30.7 billion in revenue, up 103% compared to the $15.1 billion it reported in the same period a year ago. Operating income for the group soared, from $3.6 billion in Q3 last year to $11.1 billion this year.

"Our AI infrastructure and solutions are the major drivers for cloud growth, and our customers see us as the leading provider here," Google CEO Sundar Pichai said on a conference call, and while that's certainly debatable Google Cloud does appear to be gaining share on its rivals. Microsoft reported a 48% gain in Azure revenue during the third quarter to $33.2 billion, and AWS reports earnings Thursday.
