Once the closest of allies, OpenAI and Microsoft are about to butt heads for enterprise business in yet another market.

OpenAI announced Wednesday that it will acquire Pierre Computer Company, a developer tools startup that already powers parts of the Codex app, including Pierre’s Trees and Diffs libraries, the company said in the announcement. Coming off last week's Entire launch, the move is another challenge to Microsoft’s hold on developers through GitHub.

OpenAI said it has seen in its own engineering work that the Git systems need to evolve, following its announcement earlier this week that it plans to scale Git with Pando, a new internally developed backend for Git repositories.

“With the Pierre team, we wish to set the standard for modern software development: from the first branch an agent creates to that magic moment when code is deployed to the world. We want to make Codex the place where developers and agents take on their most ambitious projects,” OpenAI said in today’s announcement.
