Several thousand IT suppliers have found their way onto the UK Government’s new £14 billion ($18.9 billion) cloud framework, the first since a major consolidation of public sector contracting.

G-Cloud 15 launched on 10 August, unlocking up to £14 billion ($18.9 billion) in cloud infrastructure and SaaS business over the next four years. By design, about 90% of the suppliers are small or medium-size enterprises, according to the Government Commercial Agency (GCA).

Philip Orumwense, the GCA’s chief tech procurement officer, said: “For too long, SMEs have faced barriers that hold them back from winning business - complex application processes, short framework windows, and procurement routes that favour incumbents. This framework addresses those concerns directly.”

The open framework is the central procurement vehicle for public sector agencies, allowing them to buy cloud, software and support services without the need for individual assessments and competitions.
