And that code is increasingly generated by agents.

Developers pushed code to GitHub 17.9 billion times in the past year, which was more commits than it saw in the past two years combined and driven primarily by agent use, according to GitHub’s annual Octoverse report.

As of September, developers started more than 40% of pull requests with an agent, up from 17% in March according to the report. For a growing share of work, the first move is now directing an agent.

This year, among repositories created with agents, the average one “logged eight times as many commits as the average new repo without one,” signaling that those building software with agents are moving faster.

In addition, this year developers counted on automation, with GitHub Actions running a job 1,440 times every second. “This equals 124 million times a day and is more than three times last year’s total,” according to the report.
