ServiceNow's Amit Zavery on AI lock-in and the acceleration of enterprise tech

AI is moving faster than a lot of enterprises can manage, but that doesn't mean they'll get locked into whatever life preserver they grab first.

As the saying goes, there are decades in which nothing happens and weeks in which decades happen. Enterprise tech is going through the second part of that dictum in 2026, and keeping up with the rapid changes impacting enterprise IT operations is an enormous job.

"AI, no doubt, is moving at a breakneck speed," said Amit Zavery, president, chief product officer, and chief operating officer of ServiceNow, in an interview with The Stack. "Our goal always has to be, how do we provide great output for our customers on our platform and products without them having to deal with the complexity?"

Now that worries about the long-term future of enterprise software have more or less faded into the background, Zavery is positioning ServiceNow to become more of a horizontal company, given that AI is flattening corporate data silos and making it accessible across different business units.

"[Customers] want to do the job in a better and faster way, in a cheaper and automated way," he said. "We keep on evolving our platform and technology stack to provide those outcomes with choices built in."

Zavery shared his thoughts on the inevitability that AI models turn into commodities, the security challenges that have accompanied this new world, and the new velocity of enterprise tech.

This interview, which took place a month ago, has been edited and condensed for clarity.

Tom Krazit: Have you seen greater adoption of open models within your customer base? We hear a lot of people talking about them, obviously, but we also hear from a lot of other people who are like, "No, I still want all the performance I can get."
