From digital candidates to broken Russian bots: How AI is impacting elections in 2024

Record-breaking numbers of people are casting ballots this year, and the agents of digital disinformation are out in full force to influence their decisions.

2024 is the election year. Globally, more voters than any year in history will head to the polls in over 64 countries, with billions of people due to cast their ballots.

It is not only a big year for democracy but potentially a milestone for AI, which is likely to have a bigger impact on elections than ever before.

So, how is AI adapting to its new role at the centre of the democratic process?

Not very well in some instances, such as during an exchange on X (the social network formerly known as Twitter) that reportedly saw a ChatGPT bot of Russian origin run out of credits and accidentally post its programming instructions.
